Handling Counteroffers in an Intervention: When the Yes Comes With Conditions

Matt Brown • 2026-09-20

Most interventions do not end in a flat no. They end in a negotiation. The person in the chair says yes, and then the conditions start: not today, not that program, not residential, not without my phone. Handling counteroffers in an intervention is one of the least discussed and most consequential skills in this work, because families rehearse for refusal and almost never for a conditional yes. This piece offers a framework for what the bargaining means, how to prepare families for it, and when a modified plan is a clinical decision rather than a concession.
